Using modern biology and history to investigate a series of grisly deaths in the countryside of 18th-century France.Something unimaginable occurred from 1764 to 1767 in the remote highlands of south-central France. For three years, a real-life monster, or monsters, ravaged the region, slaughtering by some accounts more than 100 people, mostly women and children, and inflicting severe injuries upon many others. Alarmed rural communities—and their economies—were virtually held hostage by the marauder, and local officials and Louis XV deployed dragoons and crack wolf hunters from far-off Normandy and the King’s own court to destroy the menace. And with the creature’s reign of terror occurring at the advent of the modern newspaper, it can be said the ferocious attacks in the Gévaudan region were one of the world's first media sensations.Despite extensive historical documentation about this awesome predator, no one seemed to know exactly what it was. Theories abounded: Was it an exotic animal, such as a hyena, that had escaped from a menagerie? A werewolf? A wolf-dog hybrid? A new species? Some kind of conspiracy? Or, as was proposed by the local bishop, was it a scourge of God? To this day, debates on the true nature of La Bête, “The Beast,” continue. With historical illustrations, composite sketches by the author, on-the-scene modern-day photographs, autopsy analysis, and fictionalized accounts, Beast takes a fascinating look at all the evidence, using a mix of history and modern biology to advance a theory that could solve one of the most bizarre and unexplained killing sprees of all time: France’s infamous Beast of the Gévaudan.

Well, if it's not the last word, I can't imagine what book would be! Very complete unpacking of the horrific story of the Beast of Gevaudan. The first part of this book covers what is known about the attacks, working from what documents survive. This covers 90 pages. The second half of the book, covering over 150 pages, is a look at the Beast in French popular culture , folklore, and zoology, in an effort to discern the true identity of the Beast. I was aware of some of the speculations (Hyena? Wolf-dog hybrid? A gigantic wolf or wolves?) but despite having seen and enjoyed The Brotherhood of the Wolf, I was unaware that some truly thought the Beast had been an armored who-knows-what, OR that some thought the Beast was a human monster using wolf attacks to fulfill his perverted violent fantasies , as distinguished from a werewolf.*The possibility that there was NO Beast whatsoever is broached : Mass hysteria or delusion? The last three dozen pages or so lay out the author's case for what they consider the most likely answer to what were the Beasts of the Gevaudan ; as they compare zoological findings back to the actual statements in the original documents, their case is pretty persuasive....But since various idiots at the time didn't bother to keep so much as a scrap of either of the two Beasts killed , we'll never know for 100% what the thing was, so it's safe to say the Beast(s) of the Gevaudan will continue to intrigue cryptozoologists for many more generations.I really enjoyed this book, and I enthusiastically recommend it to anyone who likes cryptozoology, zoololgy, true crime, historical 'weirdness'...*There's a few pages on Manuel Blanco Romasanta (pp 144-149). That was a nice little unexpected bonus. I got interested in this vintage serial killer after watching Werewolf Hunter : The Legend of Romasanta. I found very, very little on him online , and in all my books on true crime (and I have two 6 foot tall bookcases devoted to the subject) , not one author wrote anything about him, in multiple "criminal histories", not even Colin Wilson. Given how many other "vintage " killers (like Vacher, Troppmann, Jack the Ripper, H H Holmes, and many more) rate whole books, the lack of interest in him is surprising.
